A Day For Quotes #2 ~Memorial Day Version

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who died in military service for their country.

This first picture is of my Father In Law (on the left) who served in the Korean War. While he did not die in military service, I am sure he knew many who did.

It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle. ~Norman Schwarzkopf

Korean War Bernal (2)

The following is our very own Veterans Memorial in Greeley, CO. We are very close to it, and visit it often. My Father in-law's name is on it’s walls….

As America celebrates Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who have given their lives in our nation's wars. ~John M. McHugh

WC Veterans memorial

They fell, but o’er their glorious grave
Floats free the banner of the cause they died to save. ~Francis Marion Crawford

Flag

And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave. ~Joseph Drake

One of my favorite songs ever:

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up . . next to you and defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA!

~Lee Greenwood

Where in the World?

If you happened to visit my blog Tuesday, you would have seen pictures of my trip to Alaska in 1984!

Where in Alaska was the question I left you hanging with!

The answer is Kodiak, Alaska!

Our church youth group went on a mission trip to a partner church there and boy did they put us to work!  We painted houses, felled trees and dug ditches.  After all of that work, our one desire was to visit a beach with “real” waves.  So they took us to Fossil beach.

This first picture is Kodiak Island as seen from when we were on neighboring Woody Island.

The other 3 pictures are of Fossil Beach on Kodiak.  What strikes me is how warmly we were dressed at this beach!  It was July, and one other thing I remember was the fact the the sun set at about 10:00 pm, and rose at like 3:00 am.

This beautiful picture below I cannot take credit for, but is shows an overhead shot of Fossil Beach.

Take Me Back Tuesday ~Alaska in 1984

Once upon a time, what seems like a long, long time ago, (but was really July of 1984) I got to go to Alaska!  This was a huge deal for the “I have never been anywhere” girl from Colorado.

The youth group at my church worked and worked to be able to send a bunch of us on a Mission trip to Alaska.  If you want to know exactly where in Alaska, you must tune in on Wednesday for Where in the World? over at Lemon Drop Pie!

Kodiak, AK 07-1984

What you are looking at in these pictures was something completely new to me, was a Buoy swing.  A Buoy in Alaska is typically used as a float in the ocean to mark where crab pots are for the fisherman.  In this instance, it was strung up in a tree, much like a tire swing is.  Going on the Buoy swing, involved climbing the tree, reaching for the Buoy, taking a leap of faith, and swinging.  But hey, we were there on a church mission trip, so I took the leap!   These pictures are a few of people that were with me on the mission trip, since I was the photographer at the time!

The first picture shows some bear prints from a very large brown bear native to the area next to a grown man’s boot!

A Day For Quotes #1

I have long been a lover of quotes of all kinds! I have also met many other bloggers who share this same appreciation of quotes I have. So I give you A Day For Quotes.

If you enjoy quotes and blog about them, please feel free to link up below! I will post quotes and the Linky Tool every Sunday, and since I love reading other’s I will visit yours every week!

This week my quotes are centered around Marriage and Love. Fifteen years ago last Thursday I married my heart and my soul…my Husband. Happy Anniversary Honey!

Marriage should be a duet when one sings, the other claps. ~ Joe Murray

To keep the fire burning brightly there's one easy rule: Keep the two logs together, near enough to keep each other warm and far enough apart--about a finger's breadth--for breathing room. Good fire, good marriage, same rule. ~ Marnie Reed Crowel

Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts. ~ William Shakespeare, King Henry VI

What is the beginning? Love. What is the course. Love still. What is the goal. The goal is love. ~ Christina Rossetti

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in / my heart) i am never without it ~ e.e. cummings

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13

Marriage is the alliance of two people, one of whom never remembers birthdays and the other never forgets them. ~ Ogden Nash

And my number one marriage rule:

Step number one: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Step number two: Remember it’s all small stuff. ~ Anthony Robbins

A Short Pause…

I seriously feel like this is how my desk looks at work right now!

I am in the process of hitting some major deadlines at work and also preparing to be off next week (YEA!) .

MessyDesk_thumb26

On the home front we are right in the middle of the last week of school, dealing with figuring out the summer schedule at my Angel’s daycare and planning a Summer kick off BBQ on Sunday (seriously, what was I thinking?!)

So if I am MIA for a few days please don’t worry. I will be back in full half full force by the weekend, and maybe even have some pictures of the week to share!

Have a great few days my friends!!

Take Me Back Tuesday ~May

May will always and forever remind me of babies! I had a baby born in May, and a baby born in April. So May was when I had Maternity Leave from my job to stay home and learn how to take care of a baby. I got to do this twice. I guess that I learned pretty good judging by how the kiddo’s are today!!!

This one is when my cutie bug was about 3 days old. So take me back to May 12, 2006. The proud big sister was just barely 2.

This is my sweet Angel when she was about 5 weeks old, May of 2004. This picture has always been one of my favorites, because the hand you see is Dad’s. Always supporting her.

Quotable Sunday ~Erma Bombeck

I am having a terrible time giving up my Quotable Sunday Meme. I got to the point where I felt I had to due to disinterest of the host many parties involved. Quotes have always been a big part of my life that I attribute to my father. He taught me to love quotes from an early age, and to learn from them. So today I give you Erma:

If I had my life to live over, I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

pink rose

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the Fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

11-02-2009 08;31;47PM1

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn! With my grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, 'Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.'

pics 2 006

There would have been more 'I love you's, more 'I'm sorry's.

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and really see it... live it and never give it back. STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!!!

Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what.

Instead; let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us not those who HATE on us.

Take Me Back Tuesday ~1981

Ahh, the 80’s.   This is me in the fall on 1981, the year I started Middle School.  Did anyone else not like middle school as much as me??   Way to many hormones to deal with, and a large introduction of exactly what a clique was.  Thankfully where I went to school we only had to suffer through 7th and 8th grade there before being dumped into High School, which was much better for me!

And no, I don’t think this dress qualifies as plaid, much more of just a light check pattern, of course it was handmade for me by my mom!  I was 12 in this picture.

1981 Fall

Family vacation at the end of the summer in 1981.  My brother was 15, and obviously not to pleased to be on a family vacation in the first place!  And yes, that is plaid he and my dad have on.  I guess my new Tuesday venture needs to be finding pictures of my family NOT wearing plaid??!!
