Quotable Sunday ~Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone! It is always nice to have that extra day off and to be able to spend some time with family and friends, which is what we will be doing today!

Having several Veterans in my family, this holiday always gets me thinking about how precious our freedom is, "if you like your freedom, thank a Veteran". Here are some thoughts and quotes related to Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, originally called "Decorations Day," is a national holiday that is celebrated on the last Monday in May. A day of remembrance, the tradition goes back to the end of the American Civil War when women put flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers.

On this patriotic holiday, we honor servicemen and women who have died in war in the U.S. and every country where Americans are buried. We celebrate these people who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

"If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." ~ John Lennon

And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free, and I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. And I gladly stand up, next to you and defend her still today. ‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA. ~Lee Greenwood

Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace. -Martin Luther

The price of freedom is responsibility, but it's a bargain, because freedom is priceless. ~ Hugh Downs

If we are to reach real peace in the world, we shall have to begin with children. ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children. -William Havard

These are beautiful quotes, it was difficult to choose a favourite. I would say, "Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace." -Martin Luther

I, too, love the Hugh Downs quote. It is such a gift that we live in the country we do and enjoy these many freedoms.
